Power Skills Combat Personal Loneliness, Nurture Professional Network

Strategies for Ever-Evolving Landscapes of Unprecedented & Inevitable Change

New York City, New York Dec 16, 2020 (Issuewire.com)  - This month, Manhattan-based author Lisa Chau releases her first book, "Small Talk Techniques: Smart Strategies for Personal and Professional Success".  Published by Rockridge Press, the book helps readers nurture sustainable and supportive communities in their lives in and out of the office.

Chau, like the President of her alma mater Dartmouth College Philip J. Hanlon, argues that soft skills such as small talk are impactful, and ought to be designated as "power" skills. As explained in Forbes Magazine last year, "the use of 'power' indicates something much more important, meaningful, and necessary than 'soft' does."

During her tenure as Dartmouth's Assistant Director of Public Relations for the Tuck School of Business, Chau practiced the power of small talk. Her experiences inspired a book originally conceived as part of a larger toolkit for entrepreneurs, but she pivoted to a more narrow focus to address the growing loneliness epidemic exacerbated by social isolation mandated to prevent further Coronavirus spread.

This book is a straightforward resource to cultivate power skills for combatting personal loneliness and nurturing professional networks. Chau offers readers a range of simple ways to start, maintain, and exit conversations gracefully; listen actively; and keep others interested and engaged. Readers are taught to navigate any conversation; adapt to changing social dynamics with ease; and open doors for trust, credibility, and future success.

Project Manager Michael S. Kelly concurs, "Having spent my career at banks such as Morgan Stanley and currently with a major, international telecom, I attest to the fact that small talk is incredibly powerful in business because it’s humanizing. Beyond that, small talk is probably the most important skill needed today given our current socio-political and overly technological lives. This book is critical for those looking to ‘reboot’ their ability to connect with others in a meaningful way."

As Time Magazine reported, "COVID-19 Is Making America's Loneliness Epidemic Even Worse." Chau wants her book to help readers create stronger ties with others because acute loneliness can lead to long-term consequences that manifest as chronic health problems.
