Press Release: Zimbabweans Celebrate the Death of Robert Mugabe

Zimbabweans, many of whom are scattered all over the world, got the news that Robert Mugabe, the longtime dictator of the Southern African nation, had died on Thursday 5 September 2019. Many of them are still processing their feelings on the death of the 95-year-old despot who ruled their nation with an iron fist for 37 years until he was removed by a coup in November 2017. That was the day after Deborah Nyasha Peters had just returned home from an unsuccessful job-hunting trip to the US. It was not her first time leaving the country. Mugabe had caused the economy to collapse and at least 20% of the population migrated outside the country, a staggering figure that is commonly seen only in war-torn countries. Deborah had left Zimbabwe for 10 years in 1998 and then returned to work in South Africa in 2008 followed by a stint in Nigeria so she had finally repatriated back to Zimbabwe in 2014. Returning home was something she had long dreamed about but that dream gradually turned into a nightmare as no job opportunities opened up. A true patriot, Deborah ran for local government for Harare City Council in the 2018 Zimbabwe election but no independent candidates won, an experience she writes about in her weekly business column, https://www.theindependent.co.zw/2018/08/03/my-experience-as-election-candidate/. Zimbabwe has over 90% unemployment and the return of the Zimbabwean dollar brought back the return of hyperinflation so eventually, Deborah packed up her bags and moved back to the US in April 2019. In 2016 she delved into the story of her own personal journey as an African migrant and the reasons she had to keep moving in her first book, A Modern African Nomad’ which is available on Amazon, https://www.amazon.com/Modern-African-Deborah-Nyasha-Peters/dp/1978210213 Deborah is part of a generation who will never return to live in their own homeland because Mugabe destroyed any opportunities for the brightest and best to be able to earn a livelihood in Zimbabwe. Anywhere you go in the world now, you will find a Zimbabwe and if you read this book you will understand what drove them away from their country.
