About The Yukon Gold Potato
The Yukon Gold potato was developed in the 1960s by Canadian scientist Gary Johnston and Geoff Rowberry at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario. Johnston first bred the Yukon Gold in 1966 by crossing a nor gleam potato from North Dakota with a wild South American variety with yellow flesh. In 1981, Agriculture Canada and the University of Guelph jointly released the Yukon Gold, which is a cross between W5279-4 and Norgle.
The Yukon Gold is a large potato with a smooth, thin skin and yellow-tinged flesh. It has shallow, pink eyes that distinguish it from other yellow-skinned, yellow-fleshed cultivars. Johnston originally named the potato after the Yukon River and gold rush country, but Charlie Bishop suggested adding the word "Gold".
