World Debriefing Day Invites Healthcare Teams Worldwide to Practice a 2-Minute Debrief on Feb. 22–23, 2026

A global movement with a 2-2-2 Framework invites healthcare teams to do a 2-minute clinical debriefing, with 2+ colleagues, to improve care.

Norfolk, Virginia Feb 13, 2026 (Issuewire.com)  - The Advancing Healthcare Debriefing Quality Patient Safety Organization (AHDQ PSO) today announced the inaugural World Debriefing Day (2/22/2026)—a global call for healthcare teams to practice a simple, repeatable learning habit in everyday clinical work: debrief for two minutes, with two or more colleagues, to improve healthcare delivery.

World Debriefing Day is designed around a memorable 2-2-2 framework—2 minutes, 2+ people, to improve—to help teams practice brief, structured reflection shortly after patient care, even during busy shifts. Because February 22, 2026, falls on a Sunday, participating teams may also complete the 2-2-2 goal over a two-day window ending on February 23, 2026.

“A two-minute debrief is small enough to be realistic but powerful enough to be repeatable,” said Dr. Paul C. Mullan, the Executive Lead of the AHDQ PSO. “Healthcare is complex, high-stakes, and unpredictable. When teams move immediately from task to task, near-misses and workarounds can be forgotten before they teach us anything. World Debriefing Day gives healthcare a rallying point to normalize learning in the flow of work.”

What is a clinical debrief? A clinical debriefing is a brief, structured team discussion held shortly after patient care to reflect on what happened and improve future care delivery. It is not a lengthy meeting like a morbidity and mortality conference, and it is not a blame session. Instead, it’s a practical conversation that can happen in real clinical workflows without special equipment or the need for intensive scheduling.

Recommendations from multiple healthcare organizations have long supported debriefing after patient care, including the World Health Organization, American Heart Association, Institute for Healthcare Improvement, American Academy of Pediatrics, European Resuscitation Council, The Joint Commission, and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). A published meta-analysis has reported that structured debriefings are associated with a 25% improvement in team performance across a range of outcomes.

“Despite years of recommendations, debriefing remains underutilized,” Dr. Mullan added. “Barriers like time pressure, institutional culture, and psychological safety concerns are real. The 2-2-2 framework is intentionally built to reduce time as a barrier.  Even in a busy shift, teams can often find two minutes to pause for a debrief. The more we practice taking this time to debrief, and experiencing the gains from this activity, the more likely we will be to sustain this habit.”

World Debriefing Day emphasizes that any clinical event in any clinical setting can be debriefed, from high-acuity resuscitations to routine daily care such as vascular access, procedures, handoffs, patient transport, or medication administration. For February 22 and 23, teams are encouraged to debrief after caring for one of their first two patients of the day. Participation is simple: 2 minutes, 2+ people, to improve. Sharing is what makes it a movement. Healthcare workers are encouraged to post a photo, short video, or brief reflection using #WorldDebriefingDay and #222Day.  Do not include patient identifiers or sensitive information.

World Debriefing Day (2/22/2026) invites healthcare teams worldwide to practice a structured clinical debriefing using the 2-2-2 framework: 2 minutes, 2+ people, to improve healthcare delivery. The initiative is sponsored by the Advancing Healthcare Debriefing Quality Patient Safety Organization (AHDQ PSO: www.ahdq.org), which provides debriefing analytics and implementation support for healthcare organizations.  An ROI calculator for debriefing programs and a scorecard to benchmark debriefing program reliability can be found at the parent organization for AHDQ PSO (statdebrief.com).
