Los Angeles, California May 20, 2020 (Issuewire.com) - POKER QUEENS is a feature-length documentary film (currently on Amazon Prime and Vimeo on Demand) about the thrilling game of poker and the daring women who endeavor to be the first female champion in the history of the World Series of Poker.
With a backdrop of the glitz and glamour of high-roller Las Vegas, POKER QUEENS exposes the heartbreaking struggles of women in the world of professional poker. Women only make up about 5% of poker players today, and very few succeed as full-time players. Yet some women clearly stand out...for their beauty and skill in the game. This is their story and their quest for the top prize in the World Series of Poker. POKER QUEENS is narrated by Sia Layta, the poker player and author who believes disguising herself as a man helps her win more tournaments.
"The game of poker takes 5 minutes to learn, and a lifetime to master," says Sia Layta in the opening of the movie, "but it only takes about 30 seconds to notice that almost all poker players....are men."
Through interviews, personal video from player vlogs, dramatization, reality footage and tournament play, POKER QUEENS follows the game’s most popular female players on their journey to the WSOP (World Series of Poker) in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The film also makes use of rare and largely unseen historical film footage, photos and other archival material to depict the defiant lives of the first women in history to go against social norms and play poker...known then and now as primarily a man’s game.
Using interviews and candid footage to be filmed across Southern California and Nevada, the film introduces the most popular women in poker today including: Jennifer Tilly, Kristen Bicknell, Jennifer Harman, Liv Boeree, Loni Harwood, Kelly Minkin, Gillian Epp, Kathy Liebert, Esther Taylor, Angelica Hael, Linda Johnson, Jan Fisher, Susan Faber, Sia Layta, Kristy Arnett, Kayla Voogd, Lexy Gavin, and Muskan Sethi. It also features poker celebrities Joey Ingram, Elliot Roe, Steve Blay, Jeff Boski, and Ryan DePaulo.
Each of these players works her way to the WSOP with the ambition to become the first woman to win this prestigious championship. Several stayed together in a large hotel suite called the Poker Palace during the competition, where their stories are shared and their souls are bared.
POKER QUEENS bears witness to the inspirational and emotion-filled journey surrounding poker’s biggest event. It plucks heartstrings as it captures the universality of the competitor’s experience, the pain, sacrifice and dedication of these passionate female poker pros, and the significant challenge women face in pursuing this dream.
This documentary, directed by Sandra Mohr and produced by Christine D. Beatty, ultimately reveals the ability of anybody to win big in the game, despite sexism and social challenges women face at the table.
Watch the film at Amazon Prime, and Vimeo on Demand for viewers outside the USA.
