Hollywood, California Sep 18, 2021 (Issuewire.com) - Announced yesterday, Screenwriter Elizabeth Rossi’s “When I Grow Up”, was declared as a Top 100 screenplay for 2021, in the Historical genre of the Table Read My Screenplay contest. Thousands of submissions were received from across the globe and categorized into the top film genre categories before the winning scripts were narrowed down.
“When I Grow Up" is an inspirational true story based on the life of a young woman in the 1850s, who faced outrageous obstacles to follow her dream and become the first female doctor. Elizabeth Blackwell also became a poster child for the women’s rights movement, facing criticism even from other women who called her the 'lioness of the day'.
Ms. Rossi paints the picture describing one of her favorite scenes in the script:
"Libby stood on a wooden stage in the university’s auditorium, with the Head Dean seated next to her. The audience was the entire student body; 150 males. The Dean announced Libby’s medical school admittance was in their hands, saying if just one student objected, she wouldn't be admitted. A silence fell over the auditorium… then, the entire student body burst into laughter, agreeing to admit her as a joke and saying she’d never make it anyways."
It was an enormous struggle for her to even have that opportunity and be admitted. Ms. Blackwell later graduated at the top of her class, but then during residencies suffered a debilitating loss that never allowed her to fully become a doctor.
“Despite these misfortunes, what she did next is incredible…a story for the ages of someone following their dreams for the betterment of mankind. She helped pave the way everywhere for women (and men) to really pursue their dreams of what they want to be. She opened doors for many to follow in her footsteps, including her own sister.” Rossi said.
Rossi is hoping the screenplay will go into production soon, saying with the attention it's been getting that production companies have expressed an interest. "I’d love to see it move forward and am open to collaborating with production companies to bring the story into mainstream media... whether that's in theaters or streaming services like Netflix or Amazon."
Elizabeth has written and produced numerous films, authored three books, and has composed music. She's been nominated as a 2019 Top Female Author and had two "Best Screenplay" nominations at award shows. Additional information is available via her website: Elizabeth-Rossi.com.
