“We invented Wimbledon!” Games maker lays claim to the world’s favourite tennis tournament

London, United Kingdom Jul 12, 2018 (Issuewire.com)  - 8th Generation games maker Joe Jaques of Jaques London has served up a bold claim regarding the origins of Wimbledon.

The tournament, the most prestigious and anticipated of the grand slam tennis tour events, dates back to 1877 when the men’s singles were the only prize to play for.

However, the club itself, now called The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, was originally founded in 1868 and was simply The All England Croquet Club, with tennis only being introduced 9 years later.

So as the original inventors of croquet, Jaques of London – who have been making a wide range of games since 1795 – do seem to have had a significant part to play in the tournament’s creation.

“Our family invented croquet back in 1851, so without us, there’d be no All England Club and no Wimbledon as we know it. In other words, we invented Wimbledon!” said Joe Jaques, the current Managing Director of the 200-plus-year-old family business.

Jaques of London, who also invented Ping Pong, Tiddledy Winks, Happy Families and a wide range of well-known games, continue to manufacture and sell quality croquet sets and supplies to customers around the world, as well as a hundreds more toys and games for both children and adults.

“Wimbledon is a British institution,” continued Mr Jaques, “And we’re proud to have played such an important part in its creation.”
