Velocity Explorations Validates Tactical AI Communications Tool in Maritime Interdiction Exercise

Demonstration Highlights AI’s Role in Enhancing Multi-Agency Coordination During Navy’s Coastal Trident Innovation Exercise

Los Angeles, California Jul 15, 2025 (Issuewire.com)  - Velocity Explorations successfully demonstrated the operational value of its AI-powered communications tool, Echo, during a multi-agency maritime interdiction exercise conducted as part of the Navy's Advanced Naval Technology Exercise, known as "Coastal Trident." The event included active participation from the Los Angeles Port Police and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau, simulating the interdiction of a hijacked vessel approaching the Port of Los Angeles.

Echo, originally developed for the U.S. Space Force to support space launch operations, was evaluated in a new maritime context. During the exercise, the tool transcribed and summarized communications in real time from civilian handheld radios, operated entirely offline, and supported law enforcement personnel throughout the interdiction phase.

“This event confirmed Echo’s ability to operate as a field-ready capability,” said Alec Leeseberg, President of Velocity Explorations. “It performed reliably under pressure, handled disconnected conditions, and provided timely transcription and insight to support coordination in a live tactical scenario.”

Echo was deployed aboard intercept vessels and later on the container ship itself. It successfully processed mission-critical communications without requiring internet access and allowed participating agencies to maintain awareness in an evolving operational environment.

“Echo proved to be a valuable tool during this scenario by addressing real challenges in communication continuity,” said Brendan Applegate, Lead for Fleet Experimentation and Exercises at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division. “The ability to adapt commercial AI tools to multi-agency field conditions is a promising step forward in operational technology integration.”

During the exercise, Echo demonstrated several core capabilities that highlight its operational maturity. It provided real-time transcription and summarization of tactical radio communications, operated effectively in a fully disconnected, internet-free environment, and proved interoperable with civilian law enforcement communication systems. The system was also successfully extended onto the target vessel, where it functioned during boarding and interior operations, reinforcing its adaptability in dynamic, multi-domain scenarios.

The exercise also provided insight into future refinements. These include adapting the system for mobile use on tablet-based devices, enabling local processing inside communication-restricted environments, and exploring radio-based voice interfaces to allow direct interaction with Echo during missions.

Echo continues to be actively used by the U.S. Space Force, where it supports real-time analysis of communications across multiple channels during launch operations. Its use in both space and maritime domains underscores its adaptability and relevance across mission sets.
