Back in the early days of her academic career, she did her undergraduate work at Johns Hopkins University and then obtained her medical degree from the UMDNJ New Jersey Medical School now known as Rutgers Medical School. She then went on to complete her residency in pediatrics at the New York-Presbyterian Medical Center/Columbia University.
