US Jews Claiming Identity by Choosing Cultural Heritage Tattoos

After Pittsburgh Synagogue Atrocity Jews, Christians, and Moslems Affirm Solidarity with Tattoos.

New York City, New York Nov 7, 2018 (Issuewire.com)  - Record numbers of requests have come in for Jewish tattoos in the days following the most recent mass shooting in America.

Hebrew-Tattoos.com chief designer, Gabriel Wolff, has noted this trend for over 10 years in this business and states,

"Something is happening to Jews. It’s not a US specific phenomenon, but Jews in the US are at the forefront of it. The once clearly defined Jewish identity is being questioned, it’s borders redefined, its ideas examined.

As a tattoo designer for Jews, I’m in the privileged situation of having a close look at it, day by day.

Hebrew Tattoos for Jews have become a marker for a search for a post-religious, partly post Zionist, new Jewish identity of those trying to free themselves from the restrictions of the past: religious prohibitions, as well as the expectations of those who fled the holocaust or survived it.

These young Jews are on an intensive search for a secular Jewish identity that fits the times we live in: less restrictive, more inclusive, modern without getting lost in radical individualism.

So it’s no wonder that especially after atrocities like now in Pittsburgh, we see a huge spike in new requests for tattoos. As always, in times of emergency, Jews are looking for their roots, for their identity. And physically marking oneself as a Jew has for many become the way to do it."

Most popular tattoo designs are Stars of David, Hamsas, and Trees of Life

Our video, Stained Resistance, explores this concept.
