WHAT: California Horse Racing Board Meeting -- Public Comments Call to End Horse Racing on State Properties

WHERE: 1625 N Market Blvd, 1st Floor Hearing Room, Sacramento, CA

(Department of Consumer Affairs)

Horse racing is animal abuse. The racing industry trains and races young horses when they are not fully developed (musculoskeletal maturity does not occur until age 6). Horses are trained at 18 months & races at 2 years – causing physical trauma and musculo-skeletal problems for life. The racing industry confines horses in unnatural solitary and extreme confinement utilizes drugs to mask pain and forces horses to run, uses painful devices including whips, tongue ties and various harsh bits – horses are dominated through the infliction of pain.

Racing kills and destroys the lives of horses every year in California. While many horses are killed on the track every year, there are hundreds if not thousands killed off track. Horse racing is an exploitative and abusive industry. The vast majority of Californians do not participate in horse races. Because Californians subsidize state properties, and most do not support horse racing, the racing of horses should end on state properties. The CHRB has authority over the regulation of horse racing and simulcast (or pari-mutuel) betting at licensed California race tracks. CHRB has the authority to regulate horse racing by prohibiting horse racing on state properties. Currently, horse racing takes place on five California state properties: Alameda Co. Fairgrounds (Pleasanton), California Exposition (Sacramento), Big Fresno Fair (Fresno), Humboldt Co. Fair (Ferndale), and Sonoma Co. Fair (Santa Rosa).
