Los Angeles, California Oct 7, 2026 (Issuewire.com) - Timothy J Amerine’s historical adventure novel Hell in a Handbasket follows Billy White, a restless young farmhand determined to exchange the life chosen by his family for the untamed promise of the American West.
Driven by dreams of becoming a mountain man, Billy leaves his parents’ farm and begins an unpredictable journey toward the mountains. His route carries him aboard a flatboat, a paddle-wheel steamship, and horseback, placing new landscapes, dangers, romances, and temptations before him. Billy’s attraction to women repeatedly complicates his travels, while each encounter tests his judgment and draws him deeper into the adventurous life he has imagined.
Across its journey, the book introduces figures from many walks of life, allowing Billy’s ambitions, weaknesses, and sense of purpose to emerge naturally against a volatile and vividly rendered frontier backdrop.
A Pacific Book Review assessment by Michael Penn praises the novel’s detailed, immersive quality and cinematic storytelling. The review notes that Amerine’s raw dialogue and unvarnished portrayal of historical attitudes create an honest, thought-provoking depiction of the era. Penn also highlights the novel’s character development, carefully building tension, vivid imagery, action, and mature romantic elements, describing a story capable of keeping readers invested and on edge.
Timothy J Amerine brings practical knowledge to the novel’s wilderness setting. A storyteller and outdoorsman, he has competed at rendezvous events using tomahawks, knives, and period-correct muzzleloaders. He has also hunted in Illinois while wearing buckskin regalia, gaining firsthand familiarity with the cold, physical demands, and risks of wilderness life. His broader adventures include mountain-bike racing, wreck diving, skydiving, desert-racing pit crews, and a grueling 24-hour solo cycling event.
Blending historical fiction, action, adventure, and adult romance, Hell in a Handbasket examines destiny through one young man’s refusal to inherit a predetermined future. The novel is available through Amazon and other leading online booksellers.
