Combining a somewhat less-polished sound and using ai-generated samples while omitting the excessive usage of compression or loudness-enhancing techniques and garnishing it with a pinch of uniqueness that could potentially expose some of the self-imposed boundaries often found in modern popular music, THEMAEN's first catchy single is aimed to reward the keen listener with some surprises. „There is simply more to music than pushing hard to write, structure, sequence, quantize, mix, master to at the end sound like everything else“, Stefan Michael resumes. „Yet I find myself to have officially started this musical journey just in the middle of 2023, even if my love for all things audio goes back more than 30 years. In terms of creating music I am currently focussing on the topic of songwriting or song structuring. Experimenting, producing and releasing music that I keep enjoying listening to myself is my kind of exercise in order to have a chance to be able to improve on these skills over time. Asking Stefan Michael: „Is it possible to give music that some would consider to be „fake“ because of the usage of AI some sort of soul, or even personal character?“
„Yes, definitely“, replies Stefan Michael. „The way I am putting together and editing pre-generated sequences and samples, sometimes shuffling sentences and words or sounds around gives me great flexibility while I only use what I personally approve of, and that is not a lot to be honest."
"To give some insight into my AI-process, which may affect only selected or all parts of a particular song, I probably discard between 96 % to 99.7 % of the AI-generated outputs as most of the times it does not match anything I would consider even remotely close being worth to begin with. Although this can be a bit exhausting it always tends to make me laugh or giggle for hours due to some of the absurdities that are being thrown upon my ears.“
„The creative process in order to structure a concept of a song and to really transform it into a song starts after I have dozens, sometimes over 100 potential variants of outputs. I then download everything with a unique numbering system, listen to every output again, filter them by quality, take notes, create a global lyrics file for every sound snippet, just to have a basis to work with. When I've reached this point it comes to editing and putting the best parts and pieces into hopefully a 'magical' order to create the song. Sometimes it just writes itself intuitively and parts glue together. Of course, I need to balance all the sequences, their volumes, add or make inter-sequence volume adjustments where necessary, or fitting. The idea to simply enter a prompt and then have a finished, well-structured song ready to publish sounds quite romantic, but in reality, the AIs are being inspired by modern pop music in this case and there's just so much variance to be expected because of this. All of the work I put in in this stage I would probably describe as 'post-songwriting', where I'm just re-shaping things. I find it very satisfying though and reaching this point is just a nice feeling. When the pre-final result is acceptable after exporting the audio and listening to it again I normally start the mastering process. Depending on the song, groove and other aspects I may use different kinds of steps and plugins, but I have established a general workflow that seems to be working for me.“
