Paris, France Dec 16, 2020 (Issuewire.com)  -  The Youth IGF Movement, created by Yuliya Morenets, put in a lot of effort to work out how to engage young people from 10 regions of the world in various priority areas of the UN Secretary-General’s Roadmap for Digital Cooperation.

The project is supported by ICANN Next-Gen, the Swiss government, the Deutsche Welle Akademie’s MILEN network, Afnic and Afrinic.

The importance of the younger generations having a voice on digital issues was underlined as being a priority by different stakeholders during the annual UN Internet Governance Forum.

To make the impact of the voice of the young a reality and to establish a direct consultation channel between the decision-makers and young people, the Youth IGF Movement has developed Youth IGF Battles.

« ICANN is excited about this collaboration with the YouthIGF Movement through its NextGen@ICANN Program,” said Deborah Escalera, ICANN’s Next Generation Program Manager. Engaging young people from all of ICANN’s global regions and the broader Internet ecosystem is a key priority and an important step in creating, informing and motivating the next generation of stakeholders. »

The rapid development of the digital space and the role that digital technology is now playing in our lives, especially as demonstrated by the coronavirus crisis, makes the role of young leaders essential in building our digital future.

« How we steer digital tool, would determine what our digital legacy will be. Whether it will just be a magnificent thing that benefits some or whether it will reduce inequality. Whether the majority will be left safer or more vunerable. That, we would put before you as a challenge for your generation »- said UN Under-Secretary-General, Fabrizio Hochschild.

« We expect the Youth IGF Battles to allow decision-makers to have a one-stop shop, a place where they can get young activists’ opinion on burning digital issues and where the young can make concise proposals » -says Yuliya Morenets, founder of the Youth IGF.

The first series of battles will take place in 10 regions in five different languages, and will be based on the eight focus points of the UN Secretary-General Roadmap for Digital Cooperation.

*The Youth IGF (www.youthigf.com) created in 2011 is a UN recognised initiative present in more than 35 countries across the glob. It allows the young to discuss and take a lead in issues related to Internet governance in the format of local, national or regional debates. Twitter: @globalyouthigf
