Washington, D.C, District of Columbia Aug 7, 2025 (Issuewire.com) - Donald Trump, the US President, has added a 25% extra tariff on India for its purchase of Russian oil. According to the announcement, it is coming to known that the new rates will come into effect from 27th August. After the rise in tariffs, the amount of tariffs will be 50% for Indian imports to the US. Such a decision has startled everyone. No one expects such a modification to the tariff guide now. The Indian foreign ministry has given a response on Wednesday that the tariff is ‘unfair, unjustified and unreasonable’.
From one of the brief statements, it is also coming to known that ‘It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest. India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests’. It is not unknown to anyone now that the United States is completely against Russia in the Ukraine-Russia war. That is why they are raising the tariff on India, as they have a business. The president also said to India that they do not ‘care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine’.
A statement was given recently on Wednesday at the White House that says ‘Russian Federation's actions in Ukraine pose an ongoing threat to US national security and foreign policy, necessitating stronger measures to address the national emergency’. The US government has also added that the import of India from Russia is disrupting the United States’ action to counter Russia in this war against Ukraine.
Russia is the largest exporter of oil and gas. Thus, there are many countries that are going to make purchases from Russia. For that reason, the US government said it will ‘recommend further actions to the President as needed’ to the countries that will do business with Russia. This uncertain situation has created a massive buzz among the Indian ministry. However, Ajay Srivastava, the former Indian trade official and head of GTRI, stated, ‘India should remain calm, avoid retaliation for at least six months, and recognise that meaningful trade negotiations with the US cannot proceed under threats or mistrust’.
