London, United Kingdom Dec 1, 2020 (Issuewire.com) - The coronavirus outbreak has affected everyone, and while the current days are filled with uncertainty, one thing is clear: the most vulnerable are struggling more than ever. The Covid-19 pandemic has put a spotlight on the particularly tough realities communities are facing everywhere, but it also comes with the chance to help and rebuild key aspects of our life – the faith and trust we put in each other.
The Journalists Action Network, a non-profit founded in April 2020 that helps writers and broadcasters tell the stories that matter, John Sweeney, the founder of the internationally acclaimed Suspended Coffees movement, with support of Franco Pepe — Italy’s world-renowned pizza maker —, have joined up to launch Pizzas For Good, a charitable endeavour to provide pizza to those most in need. The Journalists Action Network’s mission has, from its first instance, been to give a voice to the ideas that will help move the world towards a solutions-based perspective.
Inspired by the story of Franco Pepe, who served his community during the first Covid-19 lockdown by baking and then distributing pizzas and bread for free to the homeless and elderly, and with the international support of the Suspended Coffees movement, we are now able to not only publish the stories of others who are, in one way or another, making it easier to navigate through this crisis but to act ourselves.
How?
Back in 2013, the Suspended Coffees movement was founded based on the Napoli tradition of caffè sospeso, a system of paying anonymously for someone else to enjoy a coffee. From this simple idea, a global network of thousands of coffee shops emerged. We are taking that same model and adapting it for pizza!
For this, we are calling for pizzerias in Italy, the UK, the US and beyond to join our charitable pizza network andto offer their customers the chance to pay forward a pizza.
Pizzerias can then...
-
deliver the forward-paid pizza to those in need, be it to a homeless shelter or NGO;
-
work with local organisations doing amazing work, be it frontline workers in healthcare, transport or shops, firemen, hospitals, or anyone who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to make sure people are
looked after and cared for;
-
share a pizza to brighten the day of families in need, those on the breadline or anyone who has
experienced a tragedy or loss,
-
or simply offer pizza to anyone visiting their restaurant and asking for it because they are hungry and
cannot afford it – no questions asked.
How can restaurants spread the word?
It’s simple:
-
With a post-it note on their windows and/or menus and/or chalkboard saying how many pizzas they have in house, ready to be delivered for free
-
and by posting on social media something along the lines of “#PizzasForGood – who needs one in ourarea?” to encourage people to nominate someone deserving of a pizza
Through this act of kindness, by paying forward for someone else, a person or group of people you may never meet, will out of the blue receive a pizza.
This project is about giving back; restoring faith in humanity, and bringing people together in the hope that it will inspire and empower everyone to make a difference one pizza at a time. It will also help local restaurants that right now, as we enter another lockdown, are even more vulnerable.
Quite simply, a pizza paid forward could change someone’s day.
Pizzerias that join the movement are added onto a global map posted on the Pizzas For Good website alongside information about why they wanted to join and what their inspiration is so that people can find out where to dine out for pizza while also making an impact.
Let the charitable pizza network begin.
