The Castle Westenhanger has recognised that whilst most of their clients want large and elaborate weddings, some couples want to choose tiny weddings, with less than ten guests and some want to elope.

Emma Clark, Head of Marketing at GLOW Events, said, "To host intimate weddings, we've teamed up with E-Lope, who launched in October 2020, to create specialist mini weddings at The Castle Westenhanger. Excitingly, from September 2021, to help ensure elopements are even more intimate and magical, we have agreed to extend our licence to marry into a previously unused area of the Castle. The Dovecote is stunning!"

Sam Lloyd, Founder of E-Lope, said, "We are delighted to be working with GLOW and thrilled that couples wanting to scale back their guest list, who are looking for an out-of-the-box location for the legal aspects of their wedding, will now be able to say, 'I do' in the hidden Dovecote".

This unique Dovecote will be available for intimate weddings from September 2021.

What is a Dovecote?

A dovecote is a beautiful ornate tower structure commissioned by the wealthiest people across the United Kingdom and France as ‘apartment blocks’ to keep hundreds of pigeons and doves to be eaten by the nobility only. The doves were easy to ‘look after’ as they foraged freely during the day, coming home to roost at night. They may be free-standing structures in various shapes or built into the end of a house or barn. The Dovecote at The Castle Westenhanger is situated next to what would have been the grand medieval kitchens. The earliest known examples of dove-keeping occur in Norman castles of the 12th century.

Available for weddings, The Castle Westenhanger is a Scheduled Ancient Monument with a Grade 1 listed manor house. It belongs to a group of early quadrangular castles and manor houses strengthened in response to threats of attack from France during the 14th.

Weddings, large or small, are offered at The Castle Westenhanger exclusively. The Castle is available to hire all year round, licenced for weddings, it enables couples to hold their ceremony, civil partnership, or blessing either outdoors in the purpose-built thatched gazebo, indoors, and now for intimate weddings in the Dovecote.

Elope weddings from 2-10 people Monday to Thursday, and Glow after parties 15 up to 200 guests in the evening any day of the week.
