Chicago, Illinois Sep 27, 2026 (Issuewire.com) - Minimalist drawings by Tatyana Markovtsev take on a different presence in silk through her collaboration with Chinese embroidery master Zhu Juncheng. The project, Feel The Line x Yi Ran Xiu, East-West Masters Co-Creation, brings together the artist's spare line work and Zhu's hand embroidery.
Two works, Conversation with Myself and The Crane Dance, show how the collaboration moves an image between media. Markovtsev drew their source images by hand on an iPad with an Apple Pencil. The digital files were shared with Zhu's studio in Yangzhou, China, where the drawings are printed or copied by hand and embroidered over. Each embroidered panel measures 40 by 55 centimetres.
The change is visible in the material itself. Silk threads laid at crossing angles catch light differently as the viewer moves. A line can brighten, thin or disappear before coming back into view. The embroidery adds this shifting surface to the structure of the drawing; the works are co-creations between the two practices.
“Art has no borders. It connects souls, not economies,” said Markovtsev.
Markovtsev's practice includes India ink on cold-press paper, acrylic, mixed media and digital drawing. Her first solo exhibition was at Chicago's Edge Gallery in 2012. She was a finalist at Art Revolution Taipei in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and received the Gallery Award from the Taiwan International Contemporary Artist Association in 2018.
Zhu holds the title China Master of Arts and Crafts and is the creator of Yi Ran Xiu embroidery. A single panel in the collaboration can require up to two weeks of hand stitching. The handwork and the direction of the silk give each panel its own material character.
The partnership originated with Yan Feng of Xiuzhentang, who connected the two studios. The works carry the shared credit: Art by Tatyana Markovtsev | Embroidery by Zhu Juncheng.
