Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh Oct 16, 2019 (Issuewire.com) - Tanager a non-profit organization today celebrated “Mahila Kisan Diwas” to recognize the contribution of women farmers in agriculture as part of their project “Shubh Mint” funded by Mars Wrigley Confectionery at Nepalganj, Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh.
The event kickstarted with the performance of women farmers from different Self-Help Groups (SHG) under the Shubh Mint program. The women from the SHG groups presented a group song and performed a role play that showcased the day to day work of a women farmers and the difficulties faced during work at the field.
Speaking at the event, Amit Kumar Singh, Country Representative, Tanager India, “In India women play a dynamic role in agriculture, however their contribution is hardly recognized. At Tanager we thrive towards recognizing the efforts of these women farmers and focus on gender equality. Moreover, we feel that women can drive productivity and innovation in agriculture and practice climate-resilient solutions with is the need of the hour. This celebration is to respect their efforts.”
During the event, fun games were organized for the women farmers present at the event. A ‘puppet show’ creating awareness about the importance of women farmers in agriculture and how climate-resilient agriculture has become the need of the hour was also organized.
The event witnessed the presence of about 200 farmers from Zaidpur region. A photo exhibition on the activities done by Tanager under Shubh Mint program with the Mint farmers in the region was arranged as part of the event.
Shubh Mint
The Shubh Mint™ program is focused on improving the long-term viability of mint by providing farmers with access to better planting materials, training on good agricultural practices and advancing the community through youth education and women’s empowerment programs. Supported by funding from Mars Wrigley Confectionery and implemented by Tanager, the first year of the program brought a team of 30 extension workers to more than 126 villages across the state. These workers trained farmers on better growing practices – focusing on fundamentals such as irrigation frequency and fertilizer application.
