Beijing, China Jan 29, 2025 (Issuewire.com) - Experts are suggesting that the US export strategy of high-tech chips might be the growth factor for the success of DeepSeek’s artificial intelligence chatbot. This company from China has created a global fear by showing dominance in AI. And Washington DC could only a little to stop her. The firm is based in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou and has now become notoriously popular all over the world. The company’s R1 program is giving tough competition to America by creating better products at a fraction of the cost.
Although the US has prohibited Chinese firms from accessing the kinds of advanced chips, there were needed to develop massive learning models. The founder of DeepSeek, Liang Wenfeng has confirmed the fact that “embargo on high-end chips” has greatly helped in the development of this project. While the chips were developed to offer US tech dominance with a long-term aim, market analysts are saying that it may have spurred the growth of DeepSeek. The company said that they have utilized the less-advanced H800 chips which were previously permitted for exporting in China until late 2023 and it has greatly helped in the development of the learning model.
Jeffrey Ding, the Asst. Prof from George Washington University said, “The constraints on China’s access to chips forced the DeepSeek team to train more efficient models that could still be competitive without huge compute training costs,” and further added, “US export controls are ineffective at preventing other countries from developing frontier models”. Talking about access to knowledge, he said, “History tells us it is impossible to bottle up a general-purpose technology like artificial intelligence.” Marc Andreessen has described the situation as a “Sputnik moment” where the US could not believe the technology gap with other countries. The R1 chatbot is built by spending only $5.6 million which shows innovation does not have to be as costly as projected.
