Spirit of Family and Faith in God Captured in Heartfelt Memoir

Retired English teacher chronicles her family’s transition from one religion to another

Livingston, California Dec 12, 2018 (Issuewire.com)  - Retired English teacher and author Leona Koehn Nichols’s memoir, Other Loves All Flee: One Family's Journey from Legalism to Grace, tackles the struggle of forging a path in defiance of established tradition. Nichols tells all how she found the courage and strength to speak out against a society whose customs no longer felt right to her or her family. Her story highlights how conformity can lead to the severing of ties to one’s own past and heritage.

Born into a Holdeman Mennonite family and baptized into the Church of God at age 10, Nichols already expected that her entire life will be committed in service to the community. Her father was a revered Church leader while her mother was a devotee in every respect of the word. She later married a minister’s son and gave birth to six children. As the children grew older, Nichols and her husband were faced with questions on how their religion and customs would dictate how they live as a family.

In Other Loves All Flee, Nichols candidly shares the struggles she had faced in reconciling her conflicting views with the Church that resulted in her family’s excommunication. She feels no regret for her choices. She is positive that they would survive the religious transition because of their fervent faith. Nichols also hopes that her story will inspire people to accept the person that they have become, regardless of the pushback.
