Setting the scene on Mental Health Globally, Ambassadors, WHO & McGill Representatives launch #IAmWithYou camp

The Master Plan launched its first Common-Agreed-Program (CAP), the #IAmWithYou campaign at the United Nations on February 24th. This event included two panels.

The Master Plan launched its first Common-Agreed-Program (CAP), the #IAmWithYou campaign at the United Nations on February 24th.  This event included two panels. The first panel was the High Level Panel with H.E. Mr. Collen V. kelapile, Permanent Representative and Ambassador Botswana, H.E. Ms. Keisha A. McGuire, Permanent Representative and Ambassador of Grenada, Dr. Nata Menabde, WHO UN Executive Director, and Chair of The Master Plan Mr. Christo Thomas.

The second panel was The Master Plan Panel with Mr. Peter Kodjic, Sec. Gen of AASU, Dr. Dilson Rassier, Dean of Education at McGill University, H.E. Amb. Narinder Kakkar, Permanent Observer at University of Peace, Mr. Joshua Harris-Till, President Young Democrats of America, Ms. Beatriz Durval, Exec. Sec. OCLAE and Mr. Robert Napier, President ESU.

Collectively the panels discussed the goal of the #IAmWithYou campaign to raise awareness of, and provide resources for, the millions of young people around the world suffering from depression, loneliness, and the suicidal ideations that can accompany them.

Some excerpts from the panels include WHO UN Executive Director Dr. Nata Menabde sharing that schools are an appropriate setting for interventions targeted to young people because these settings provide consistent and direct access to many young people. Dr. Dilson Rassier shared the Faculty of Education at McGill University currently has several initiatives linking mental health and education for students and professors at the school and University levels.

Mental Global Health was at the forefront of the #IAmWithYou launch as this information was shared:

  • Supports the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (special focus on youth)
  • 300 Million Cases of Mental Health in the world right now.
  • 1 in every 5 people has a mental health condition.
  • One of the goals of the # IAmWithYou campaign is to let people know they are not alone; to help eradicate any stigma associated with mental health to people will seek treatment.
  • Mental health issues are costing the global economy 1 Trillion a year
