San Francisco, California Jan 28, 2019 (Issuewire.com) - A ripple went through the San Francisco creative community when it was announced in 2018 that owners Les and Makiko were retiring, and closing the doors of Bazaar Cafe. In it’s 20 years on 5927 California Street, the venue had hosted more than 6000 shows, nurtured many a starving artist with its curry, and brought together a community who met fellow creatives, started new projects or hosted birthdays, weddings and anniversary celebrations in the garden.
Among those saddened by the news were Joshua Johnson and Rozanne Stoman, songwriters who had met at the cafe and whose wedding ceremony had just been officiated by owner Les. The two put any thoughts of a honeymoon on hold and started planning how they could keep this treasure in their, and their friends’ lives. Josh had already hosted the Thursday open mic at Bazaar for seven years, and loves all things music, art, and cooking - could they? Would they?
Fast-forward five months, and Bazaar is ready! The walls and decor have been refreshed with an art-friendly palette, while intimate acoustic music shows remained the driver for any layout decisions.
The menu adds a few nods to Rozanne’s South African roots, but the Japanese curry stayed! Patrons can try the gluten-free Fare Thee Well Oh Honey Almond cake, and Milk Tart, alongside old favorites like Strawberry Rhubarb Pie. Josh added his family “cinnabyte” recipe and designed the Cape Town, a three-cheese, smokily grilled cheese sandwich that replicates the open-fire grilled sandwiches he encountered in South Africa.
Finally, Josh did an artisan’s deep dive into the cafe’s coffee offerings and fine-tuned the coffee making equipment, process, and training. All the current staff is regulars who wanted to be a part of revitalizing Bazaar, lending their ideas and enthusiasm to space.
The opening weekend will be celebrated by an art show featuring selected posters salvaged from the Bazaar bathroom, a Friday night acoustic show featuring artists hailing from the Bazaar’s opening days in the 90s all the way through to some up-and-coming talent, a Saturday show celebrating past songwriter community contributors, and a Sunday Ukuladies and Gentlemen show, hosted by Allison Craig.
Patrons are invited to come and celebrate this new chapter in Bazaar Cafe’s story!
