Cusco, Peru Feb 23, 2022 (Issuewire.com) - As with many other customs in marriages that have been passed down the ages and generation, the Andeans have their form of wedding. While many ceremonies have changed over the years, Andean have been continuing with the same old rituals.
When it comes to weddings one goes into so much planning and grandeur. Booking the venue, going for designer clothes, getting the right food and so many other things. But some would like to go different. Not just getting some designer dress or wonderful locations, or getting everything decorated. Something that is beyond entering the church or any other religious institution. For them, they might be looking forward to getting married unconventionally and symbolically.
An Andean wedding ceremony is one such kind. They are different from a conjugal ceremony that usually happens. It is a ritual that is carried out shaman amid nature. In this ceremony, you will find the presence of people, the shamans, and all the Sacred Deities that are found in the Andean religion. The Andean Duality constitutes the Apus, Mountain Spirits (representing the masculine side) and the Pachamama, Mother Earth (representing the feminine side), Water that symbolizes purity, and the Fire which represents the force.
The purpose of involving nature and the elements is the belief that the Apus and Pachamama will protect and take care of the couple, warding off any evils that might harm them in their matrimonial bliss. It is a commitment ritual to bring together the couple and unify them in the presence of the Pachamama, who is worshipped and revered by the Andeans.
The Perushamansare a group of shamans who brings to you the detailed rituals about this unique wedding. A ceremony that still forms an integral part of the living tradition of the people of Andes. The participants of the Andean wedding ceremony are even those wedded couples who come to be part of this ritual to bless the couple and also to re-affirm their marriage. The ancient ceremony is performed amid nature, seeking the blessing of the Apus. Then the shamans explain deeply and in detail the meaning of this ritual and the commitment of being together in the journey of life, to the bride and the groom. Their bond is string together by the spirit of Apus, Pachamama, water, and fire that affirms their communion. They are believed to be the guardians of the couple who protects from any enemy that can harm the couple.
Before the ceremony, with incense and floral essences, a cleansing ritual takes place. To show gratitude, an offering is made to Pachamama for being there for the couple and of the people of the land and blessing them abundantly. Seeds, flowers, colored wools, candies, beans, metals, and llama fat are arranged symbolically in the coca leaves, which are the offering to be presented to Pachamama. 3 perfect coca leaves which are an integral part of the Andean wedding ceremony are shared at the ceremony, which is known as ‘Kintu’. Then thin hand-woven bracelets are given during the ritual, which marks as a traditional symbol. To celebrate the union a tinkasa (toast) is raised for the couple.
