In 2010, RipPak founder Donald Williams was recalled, along with his Marine Corps unit with the 22nd MEU, from their post deployment leave to aid in the Haiti Earthquake Relief Effort. The thousands of Meals-Ready-To-Eat (M.R.E.’s) being delivered did not include anything for oral/dental health. Water bottles are inefficient and produce waste, and toothbrushes can quickly become unsanitary in harsh environments. Often the Haitians had to trade the M.R.E.’s at the local food markets for softer foods, sacrificing the nutrition from the full meals. The long-term effect of this was people dying because of a lack of nutrition and oral infections that could have been prevented with simple teeth brushing or mouth washing. In short, the meals were offering nutrients to the population, but fueling the fire of dental hygiene problems. This discrepancy exists not only in Haiti, but in nearly every natural disaster site, war torn country, and developing communities around the world.
