  • Patrea Kroll, RN, Registered Nurse

New York City, New York Jul 11, 2019 (Issuewire.com)  - Patrea is a registered nurse who has retired from practice twice and is currently working for Providence Health & Services in Oregon, which is a not-for-profit Catholic network of hospitals, care centers, health plans, physicians, clinics, home health care and affiliated services guided by a mission of caring that the Sisters of Providence began in the West nearly 160 years ago.

Patrea started out as a hospital volunteer in high school, also known as a candy striper.  Patrea earned her nursing degree from Emanuel Hospital School of Nursing in 1967. Patrea has held memberships with several professional organizations, including the Society of Trauma nurses and the Emergency Nurses Association. She was also a contributing author for the 2008 Edition of TEAM (Trauma Emergency Assessment and Management) Course for Nurses for the Oregon Department of Human Services.  She was a TEAM and TNCC class instructor as well as a guest instructor for Trauma classes at Linfield-Good Samaritan School of Nursing.

Her career began in IV Therapy at Emanuel Hospital. In 1968, she married and moved to Saint Helens, Oregon where she worked 12 years in the local hospital, Columbia District Hospital. She continued to work on call at Emanuel during those years. After taking a break from nursing due to a shoulder injury in a motor vehicle crash, she returned to Legacy Emanuel full time in 1982 and transferred to the Emergency Department in 1983. In 1988, Emanuel became one of only two Level I trauma centres in Oregon and she became an ED/TRN (Trauma Resuscitation Nurse) until becoming a TNC (Trauma Nurse Coordinator) in 2002. She continued in that role until her first retirement in 2009.

In 2009, Patrea was asked to become a nurse consultant and back -up RN for an Assisted Living Facility where her cousin was a resident and found this to be a new opportunity to continue using her expertise to help others. While there she served on the Oregon State Committee for updating the Oregon Administrative Rules for Assisted Living Facilities. She retired from there in 2016.

Working with some former trauma colleagues again who were now at Providence was a new opportunity and in October 2016, she accepted a position and is currently serving as a utilization review (UR) coordinator. UR coordinators are responsible for ensuring that patients receive the correct types of treatments for appropriate amounts of time.

Patrea attributes her success to her love for the profession, her willingness to help others in need, her desire to continually learn and teach new nurses, her dedication to providing quality patient care, as well as her desire to make a difference by giving her best each and every day.

Patrea enjoys spending time with her family, being involved in her church as a deaconess and choir member, watching sports (especially her grandchildren) and has been a long time season ticket holder to the Portland Trailblazers. Prior to her husband’s death, they had the opportunity to travel extensively and were in every state and some foreign country’s together except Hawaii which she visited with her son’s family in 2008.

A registered nurse is a nurse who has graduated from a nursing program and met the requirements outlined by a country, state, province or similar licensing body to obtain a nursing license. RNs fulfil a variety of job duties. In addition to the primary role in treating and caring for patients, their responsibilities also include educating patients and the public about a variety of medical conditions, as well as providing emotional support and advice to the families of their patients. Other RN job functions include performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results, operating medical equipment, administering medications, recording patients’ symptoms and medical histories, and assisting with patient rehabilitation and follow-up.
