Grants Pass, Oregon May 31, 2026 (Issuewire.com) - Opal’s Walk for Freedom is coming to Grants Pass on June 19, 2026, as part of a nationwide movement honoring Juneteenth and the ongoing pursuit of freedom, equality, and justice. Inspired by Dr. Opal Lee, this globally recognized initiative continues to unite communities across the country through education, reflection, and collective action.
The Grants Pass activation will bring together residents, community leaders, youth, families, and organizations for a meaningful day centered on unity, history, and civic engagement. Designed to create both reflection and celebration, the event will offer opportunities for the community to connect across generations while honoring the significance of Juneteenth and its continued relevance today.
The experience will begin with an opening gathering featuring local speakers, cultural presentations, and moments of reflection before participants join the symbolic walk honoring the delayed liberation of enslaved people. The walk will serve as a visible commitment to community solidarity, inclusion, and progress.
“Juneteenth is not just a day to remember the past; it is a day to commit to action in the present,” said Dr. Opal Lee, affectionately known as the Grandmother of Juneteenth. “By coming together in cities across the nation, we honor those who fought for freedom and empower the next generation to carry forward the work of justice, civic participation, and unity.”
This year, the walk will take place in seven cities across the United States, creating a national celebration of freedom, resilience, and hope. Residents are invited to register, walk, and be part of a growing movement that celebrates community, cultural awareness, and the collective responsibility we have to uphold liberty and justice for all.
