Oldest live rock bar in Tokyo launches crowdfunding for survival

Opened in 1981, rock bar Bauhaus is in danger after one year of closure following the pandemic. To gather funds needed to survive beyond its 40th anniversary, Bauhaus launches a crowdfunding campaign.

Tokyo, Japan Jun 26, 2021 (Issuewire.com)  - Founded in 1981, live rock bar Bauhaus has been closed since February 2020 because of COVID-19. The establishment - nicknamed “the Temple of Rock” by its regular customers - turns 40 years old this year, making it the longest operating live rock bar in Tokyo. But there’s no anniversary party: instead, a desperate financial situation.

After more than one year of closure, we are now reaching the limits of what we can do to survive without exterior help”, explains Toru Kagami, director, and drummer of Bauhaus.

As a live music bar, Bauhaus is a place of entertainment. It is also a place of culture, acting as a living museum of western rock music from the last 5 decades. Every night until 2020 and the pandemic, the resident band performed the best of classic rock, heavy metal, and hard rock from the US and UK, boasting a catalogue of more than two hundred jewels such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Smells Like Teen Spirit, or Sweet Child O’Mine.

To survive, Bauhaus needs to relocate to a new venue offering better conditions. This relocation, as well as the measures needed to sustain the business while visitor numbers recover from the pandemic, represent important costs.

To cover these costs, Bauhaus launched on 26th June 2021 at 20:00 (JST) a crowdfunding campaign on Campfire - the Kickstarter of Japan. This campaign, available in English and Japanese, is open to everyone willing to help save Tokyo’s oldest live rock bar.

We can’t let 40 years of history end like this. We hope we can count on the support of friends of rock music and culture from around the world to save our establishment. It’s our mission to keep on rocking, we have to keep these songs alive and accessible, for fans of rock today, and for the next generations.”

Coronavirus has caused casualties in the nightlife entertainment business in Japan. But for the rockers of Bauhaus, the show must go on. With a little help from rock’s friends.
