After obtaining his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Dr. Galanopoulos earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago College of Medicine, where he graduated in 2007 with the University’s Department of Radiation and Cellular Oncology Departmental Award. While in medical school, he received the 2004 Brain Research Foundation Award for best clinical neuroscience project for his work on radiation-induced gene therapy in glioblastoma multiforme. 

Dr. Galanopoulos conducted his internship in internal medicine at Northwestern McGaw Medical Center | Evanston Hospital in Evanston, IL (2007 - 2008). He then completed his radiation oncology residency training at Case Western Reserve University | University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center in Cleveland, Ohio (2008 - 2012), and was honored with the 2010 RSNA Roentgen Research Award for his work in breast cancer research. 

Following his training, he attained board certification in radiation oncology from the American Board of Radiology. Established in 1934, the American Board of Radiology is a not-for-profit physician-led organization with headquarters in Tucson, Arizona. It oversees the certification and ongoing professional development of specialists in diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, radiation oncology, and medical physics.

Radiation oncology (radiotherapy/radiation therapy) is a medical speciality that is an essential part of a multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment. It uses high-energy x-rays (photons) most commonly delivered through a linear accelerator.

Prior to his current endeavors, Dr. Galanopoulos was the Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at AMITA Health Saint Joseph Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. During his tenure, he led the opening of the radiation oncology department at the Mark M. Connolly MD Center for Cancer and Specialty Care in 2015. Dr. Galanopoulos also developed and implemented stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) programs at Saint Joseph Hospital which became one of a select few community hospitals in Chicago to offer this type of treatment on a Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator.

Licensed to practice in the states of Georgia and Illinois, Dr. Galanopoulos maintains professional memberships with the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society for Radiation Oncology, and the American College of Radiology.

Outside his professional commitments, Dr. Galanopoulos enjoys spending time with his wife and their two dogs. A big sports fan, he follows hockey, baseball, and football. His other hobbies include working on cars, trap shooting, and reading books on history. Fluent in Greek, he enjoys traveling back to Greece in the summertime to visit family.
