San Diego, California Mar 6, 2019 (Issuewire.com) - Zeroline Golf LLC today announced the release of a new Apple iOS App named Hitting Metrics - MTRx. Designed for batters of all ages and skill levels, this app will help improve important aspects of hitting:
- Core speed and quickness for bat speed and power.
- Load and impact position of hips for better plate coverage and to enable hitting to all fields.
- Switch-hitting with consistent metrics from both sides of the plate.
With the iPhone in a belt holder or tucked firmly into a batter’s belt, the app uses the iPhone’s microphone, gyroscope and motion detector to detect and record swings. During the batter’s stance, load, stride, swing and contact with the ball, the app records key data points. These include rotation, velocity, speed, and timing of the swing. The microphone is used to determine the impact point. Key swing data is displayed in simple formats that provide instant feedback about each swing.
MTRx has an intelligent swing recognition algorithm designed to record only real swings that contact a ball. Motion and sound data is analyzed 100 times each second so the data is highly accurate.
“Video technology, while potentially helpful for some types of swing analysis, does not provide batters with precise metrics for their own swing that they can apply during batting practice or a game. Hitting MTRx allows hitters to replicate their ideal swing data metrics many times over until it becomes a habit,” said Devin Fitzmaurice, Co-Founder of Zeroline Golf.
Popular Hitter Training Use Cases
Case 1: Batters who open their front side too much for pitches on the outer part of the plate usually hit weak ground balls or miss the pitch. The Hitting Metrics can identify over-rotation of the hips, sometimes 70 to 90 degrees at impact. Using the app, batters can quickly learn to turn their hips between 40 to 75 degrees open at impact. This allows them to wait longer and make contact a little deeper in the hitting zone resulting in much better contact hitting the ball to the opposite field.
Case 2: When hitters make good contact but don’t drive the ball with much power they often have a poor hip rotation and low velocity. Another indicator is a slow time from when the hips start rotating forward to the point the bat makes the impact with the ball. Hitting Metrics measures hip velocity in degrees per second and the time in seconds from start to impact. Hitters can use the app to measure improvement in speed and time to impact. Quicker hips can help create better separation with the torso and arms resulting in faster bat speed and more power.
Case 3: Hard inside pitches can jam batters who fail to clear their hips enough to allow the shoulders and arms to get the bat on the ball earlier. Hitting Metrics can identify this specific under rotation of the hips, usually less than 65 degrees at impact. Practising with a tee on the inside corner and slightly in front of the plate, batters can measure the exact rotation of their hips at impact. Feedback from the app helps hitters learn the feel of getting their hips 80, 90, or even 100 degrees open at impact. They will contact the ball more on the barrel of the bat rather than the handle.
Case 4: Switch-hitting consistently well from both sides is very difficult. Batters swing characteristics can vary greatly when hitting from either side. Hitting Metrics records swings for left or right-handed batters. The app makes it simple to compare hip rotation at load and impact, velocity, and time to impact as the batter switches sides. Batters can use immediate feedback from the app to minimize the obvious differences. The result is better plate coverage, quickness, and more power batting either right or left-handed.
“We believe this app will be a valuable tool for Cricket, Softball, and Baseball coaches by making instruction more effective and increasing interaction with their students,” added Fitzmaurice.
