Note: The Carolina Reaper pepper originated in Fort Mill, South Carolina, where it was developed by Ed Currie in 2013. The pepper is a cross between the Red Habanero and the red Ghost Pepper, and is artificially created but not genetically modified. Currie crossbreeds his pepper plants by taking pollen from one plant with a paintbrush and then placing it on another plant. For example, to create the Carolina Reaper, he combined the Naga pepper from Pakistan with the La Soufriere pepper from Saint Vincent.
