National Urban Kids Fish Virtual Derby Part 2 Begins September 26th

Kansas City, Missouri Sep 23, 2020 (Issuewire.com)  - So how do you attract a crowd to a fishing derby and still keep safe amid the COVID-19 pandemic?

You go virtual, of course.

The Urban Kids Fish Derby, the brainchild of Wayne Hubbard and Candice Price of Urban American Outdoors TV, has attracted hundreds of participants everywhere from Kansas City to Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. in recent years. But those in-person derbies weren’t possible this summer and fall due to social-distancing measures designed to stop the spread of the highly contagious virus.

So, Hubbard and Price went to the next best thing: They established a virtual derby.

Here’s how it works:

  • The free event is open to children between the ages of 4 to 18 across the country.
  • The National Urban Kids Fish Virtual Derby runs from Sept. 26 to Oct. 4, 2020.
  • Families must go to the website com to register. Then they must download and print the Digital Tackle Box.
  • Kids accompanied by adults can fish anywhere. When a fish is caught, families can fill out the Digital Tackle Box printout and display it with a photo of the child with his or her catch.
  • The photos should be posted on the Urban Kids Fish Facebook page with the hashtag #ukfvirtual.
  • Prizes will be awarded, and winners will be drawn, announced, and notified. There will be one grand prize winner.
  • Most states require anglers from 16 to 64 to have a fishing license. Participants in that age bracket must have a license.

SODAS (Saving Our Daughters and Sons) Life, Inc. will join Urban American Outdoors to host the virtual fishing derby. Partners will include the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Park Service, Trout Unlimited, Gates Bar-B-Que, and KPRS Hot 103.3 radio station.

“This would have been our 15th year of doing the Urban Kids Fishing Derby nationally, but due to COVID-19, we canceled all of our events for safety,” Hubbard said. “But families still wanted to do something out in nature, so we created this virtual fishing event. “We did a test a few weeks back, and it was very successful, drawing families from 26 states. So we’re doing it again.”

The start of the virtual fishing derby will coincide with National Hunting and Fishing Day and National Public Lands Day on Sept. 26.

Urban American Outdoors the first diverse outdoor lifestyle TV show. The show is 100% owned and produced by an African American Woman, Candice Price. Hubbard and Price have been national leaders in achieving diversity and inclusion in the outdoors. They are currently featured on the Outdoor Life website.
