Toronto, Ontario Jun 16, 2024 (Issuewire.com) - National Filipino Heritage Canada (NFHC) kicked off a month-long celebration of Filipino heritage with a vibrant event at the Scarborough Civic Center on May 25, 2024. The gathering, attended by diverse esteemed guests, community leaders, and cultural enthusiasts, marked a significant moment in Canada's recognition of Filipino contributions to its multicultural tapestry.
The event was graced by distinguished guests, including Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, Members of Parliament Mrs. Salma Zahid and Mr. Shaun Chen, Hon. Marco Mendicino, and Consul General Angelica Escalona from the Philippine Consulate in Toronto. Their active participation underscored the importance of Filipino heritage in Canadian society and highlighted the strong bonds between Canada and the Philippines.
Throughout the evening, speeches resonated with themes of resilience, diversity, and cultural pride, emphasizing the profound impact of Filipino Canadians on shaping the nation's identity. A pivotal moment came with the declaration of June as Filipino Heritage Month, a significant step celebrated nationwide as a testament to the rich cultural heritage shared between the two nations.
NFHC also seized the opportunity to acknowledge and express deep gratitude to several non-profit organizations for their exceptional community service and engagement contributions. Through their pivotal role in enhancing the quality of life for many within the Filipino community and beyond, these organizations have left an indelible mark on our society.
Looking forward, NFHC remains dedicated to promoting greater awareness and appreciation of Filipino culture across Canada. The launch event at Scarborough Civic Center celebrated past achievements and set the stage for a month of festivities and educational activities to foster cultural understanding and unity. Among those recognized were:
The Felix Y. Manalo Foundation, Inc.: The foundation, an integral part of the Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church of Christ), exemplifies solidarity and civic responsibility through volunteer work and philanthropic endeavours, particularly in addressing poverty.
Pueblo Science: A Toronto-based charity dedicated to advancing science education (STEM) and fostering innovation in low-resource communities, founded by University of Toronto Professor Dr. Cynthia Goh and alumna Dr. Mayrose Salvador.
The Filipino Canadian Dental Hygienists' Society: Engaging with the community through various activities, including health education and free dental clinics, this society advocates for health equity and provides essential dental care services.
The Sine Institute: Focused on cultivating and leading a community of Philippine excellence in creative endeavours, the institute champions a holistic approach to filmmaking and storytelling.
One of the standout moments of the event was the screening of a one-hour documentary crafted by Marie and Paul Arevalo, shedding light on the indomitable spirit and resilience of the Filipino diaspora in realizing their dreams and aspirations.
The documentary featured interviews with notable personalities such as Dr. Patrick Alcedo, Edsel Mutia, the Caleon Twins, Noreen Ocampo, Jillian Joy San Juan, Michaelangelo Masangkay, and many more, who brought smart perspectives to the Filipino Canadian diaspora.
But the celebration doesn't end there! Everyone is invited to Albert Campbell Square on Saturday, June 29, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for an immersive journey into the heart of Filipino culture. From captivating live performances by home-grown talents to the rhythmic beats of traditional music and the grace of folk and contemporary dances, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
What truly makes this event special is the mouthwatering array of Pinoy delicacies awaiting everyone. Indulge your taste buds in the flavours of the Philippines, from savoury classics to sweet treats that will leave everyone craving more.
