Mintbean is launching its hackathon assessment service, Passport, making it free during the COVID-19 pandemic

Passport will help the remote hiring capabilities of tech companies during this crisis

Toronto, Ontario Mar 24, 2020 (Issuewire.com)  - Mintbean (www.mintbean.io), today announced the launch of Mintbean Passport, an online developer assessment hackathon which allows for the mass assessments of software developers, providing crowd-sourced insights into their technical skills. This announcement comes in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced many companies to operate remotely. In recognition of this, Mintbean is offering its newly launched hackathon service for free to help both companies and tech workers navigate this environment.

“Like everyone else, we were caught off guard by this crisis. Many developers are losing their jobs, while most employers who need developers lack remote hiring capabilities. We hope that making Mintbean Passport free helps developers and companies connect safely during this crisis.”

-Monarch Wadia, CEO of Mintbean

Early indications show extreme swings in job openings for the tech industry, with Information Technology jobs being down 27.3% and Internet and Tech jobs being up 41.1% according to tech republic citing a glassdoor survey. Tech employees are feeling insecure with Forbes reporting on a survey done on over 7000 people with Blind with 53.8% reporting fears of layoffs and 62% on impacts to income. While these large shifts in demand are happening, businesses are not well equipped to hire remotely. WeWorkRemotely did a survey finding that the biggest stumbling block to hiring remotely is filtering, followed closely by interviewing and onboarding.

The Hackathon service is designed to showcase the talents of developers by having them complete a coding challenge in real-time, and review the code of their fellow job applicants. Unlike other popular coding assessment platforms with automated scoring, the Mintbean passport relies on crowdsourcing the results of both coding and code review abilities. This approach acknowledges that developers just spend 32% of their time writing new code according to a survey of 400 developers reported by the new stack. With crucial tasks like code maintenance, testing and meetings reliant on collaborating, understanding, and communicating about existing code written by others.

“We wanted to give employers the opportunity to get much deeper insights into their developer candidates by simulating key aspects of the modern software developer job. By including code reviews you capture insights that a compiler or automated scoring system simply can’t”

-Joseph Karim, Product Manager at Mintbean
