Hackensack, New Jersey May 27, 2026 (Issuewire.com)  - Lorraine M. Lazar, MD, PhD, is a highly respected child neurologist and pediatric epileptologist who has dedicated more than 26 years to caring for children with neurological disorders, particularly epilepsy. Known for her compassionate approach, academic excellence, and commitment to advancing epilepsy treatment, Dr. Lazar has built a distinguished career helping children and families navigate some of the most complex neurological challenges.

Originally from Long Island, New York, Dr. Lazar began her academic journey at the University of Pennsylvania before entering the MD-PhD program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where she graduated in 1993. Her doctoral research focused on molecular neurobiology and neuroscience, providing a strong scientific and research foundation that continues to influence her work in pediatric neurology and epilepsy care today.

Dr. Lazar completed her extensive medical training at New York Hospital–Cornell in 1998, where she trained in pediatrics, neurology, child neurology, and completed a specialized epilepsy fellowship. After practicing in New York for one year, she relocated her practice to New Jersey in 2000 and has remained there for the past 25 years, serving children and families throughout the region.

For the last 11 years, Dr. Lazar has been an integral member of Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group, a private consortium practice established to address the shortage of epileptologists and expand access to specialized epilepsy care across multiple hospitals in New York and New Jersey. Through this work, she has played a significant role in improving access to advanced epilepsy diagnosis and treatment for pediatric patients.

Currently, Dr. Lazar serves as Program Director for the Pediatric Epilepsy Center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, a Level 3 epilepsy center that she is actively working to elevate to Level 4 status. Her clinical focus centers on helping children whose seizures are not adequately controlled with medication by evaluating advanced treatment options, including epilepsy surgery that may significantly improve or even cure seizure disorders.

“What I love most about practicing medicine are really two things that go hand in hand,” says Dr. Lazar. “Intellectually, the cases can be very challenging, and if you’re someone who likes puzzle solving, it is intellectually stimulating, and I will never get tired of that. But attached to that intellectual challenge is that beautiful, human, small person who is just starting out in life, and they’ve been given this unasked-for obstacle of epilepsy.”

She continues, “Trying to get them through it or cure them is incredibly rewarding. There’s nothing better than getting a hug from a child whose seizures you’ve cured through an epilepsy surgery program.”

In addition to her epilepsy work, Dr. Lazar and her colleagues also serve as general child neurologists for inpatients at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center. She maintains a strong commitment to medical education as well, teaching pediatric neurology fellows, neurology residents, and pediatric residents at University Hospital. Through mentorship and clinical teaching, she continues helping shape the next generation of neurologists and epilepsy specialists.

Dr. Lazar also maintains hospital affiliations with Atlantic Health System and Hackensack University Medical Center. She regularly presents lectures, educational sessions, and grand rounds at medical institutions while contributing to ongoing advancements within pediatric neurology and epilepsy care.

Her professional accomplishments include membership in the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, as well as active involvement with the American Academy of Neurology and the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society. In addition, Dr. Lazar has contributed to the medical literature through the publication of a chapter in a pediatric textbook.

Through her leadership, clinical expertise, teaching, and unwavering compassion for children and families, Dr. Lorraine M. Lazar continues to advance the treatment of epilepsy while improving quality of life and long-term outcomes for pediatric patients facing neurological disorders.
