In an opinion piece published last week on several local outlets, Sheriff Alex Villanueva praised the work of the county’s Citizen Redistricting Commission, and then called for an array of reforms to modernize Los Angeles county governance to ensure it better represents the area’s new demographics, increased population and expanded role of nonprofits.

In the piece, “Reforms are needed to ‘Democratize’ Los Angeles County government starting NOW”

Sheriff Villanueva starkly lays out the county’s demographic governance mismatch. He notes, “[w]ith each (supervisor) representing 2 million residents in LA County, defeating incumbent Board of Supervisors is nearly impossible.”  Then observes, “[n]on-Hispanic whites are 26.1% of the population but have three of the five seats on the Board.”

The results of the demographic governance mismatch, Sheriff Villanueva concludes, have dramatic impacts on the lives of working class Latinos, from disproportionate share of COVID deaths to violent street crime.  “[M]ost of the supervisors have pandered to the “woke” extremism that is decaying the Democratic Party. The White liberals on the board fear being labeled a racist or too “pro police.””

“It is time to expand the board of supervisors from five (5) elected members to seven (7) or even nine (9) seats so even more voices can be heard.”

-Sheriff Villanueva

Sheriff Villanueva’s sweeping reform agenda includes:

  • The expansion of the number of county supervisors,
  • Creation of a county-wide executive,
  • More diverse commissions and boards,
  • Require commissioners and board members file financial interest statements, and
  • Require all organizations to register as lobbyists if they pursue grants, service contracts, or “seed money.”
