The tragedy unfolded on June 19, 1982, when Chin, a 27-year-old Chinese American, went to a Detroit bar with three friends to celebrate his upcoming wedding. Before that night was over, he lay unconscious on a Detroit street bludgeoned with a baseball bat by two out-of-work auto workers.
Before he lost consciousness, Chin said to his friend, “It isn’t fair.”
Four days later he died from severe head injuries. Several hundred people, originally invited to Chin’s wedding, attended instead his funeral.
A coalition of national and local groups is planning a four-day commemoration in Detroit from June 16-19, 2022.
In the juvenile novel, A Day For Vincent Chin and Me, the main character, Tommy, is embarrassed by his mother’s involvement in a similar commemoration. But once Tommy and his friends find their own cause, he discovers common ground with his mother and comes to understand what it means to fight for something in which you believe.
