Composer and music producer Hristo Ganev has launched a creative mission to redefine AI-assisted music by blending modern technology with the ancient, mystical sounds of Bulgarian folklore. His goal is not just to make music, but to revive a deep cultural connection between past and present, showing how AI can become a bridge between tradition and innovation.
Ganev’s journey began about five months ago when he started composing with SUNO AI. Like many early adopters of AI music tools, he often heard the same criticism: “AI music has no soul.” But for him, the truth was the opposite.
“Ever since I started working with SUNO and creating music through it, I’ve slowly and gradually begun to find my own soul — the one I probably lost back in childhood,” Ganev shares. “The loss of it made me wander aimlessly through life for so many years. I’m deeply grateful that thanks to modern technology, I’ve found both my means of expression and the path back to my soul.”
His process is a deeply human collaboration with technology. Ganev writes all his own lyrics and sometimes uses tools like ChatGPT to assist with rhymes or translations. This helps him stay authentic while working across multiple languages — including English, Russian, and his native Bulgarian.
Unlike many who view AI as a shortcut, Ganev treats it as a creative companion. His intention was never to compete with other musicians but to create musical prototypes for humanization — songs that could later be refined, performed, or expanded upon by other artists and producers.
“My original idea was not to compete with musicians by releasing my own AI music,” he explains. “It was to offer my musical prototypes for humanization. If I don’t find producers or musicians who are willing to humanize my songs, I might unwillingly become a competitor — but even if that happens, I don’t plan to stop. My passion for creating will always drive me.”
Ganev’s artistic vision carries a dual mission. Internationally, he aims to introduce a unique sound that fuses global genres with Bulgarian influences. Locally, he hopes to revive Bulgaria’s ancient folk traditions, merging them with contemporary styles to make them relevant and appealing to younger generations.
“My mission is to revive Bulgaria’s ancient folk music and singing traditions,” he says. “I want to create songs in Bulgarian that blend popular global genres with Bulgarian ethnic motifs, traditional vocals, and folk-inspired sounds. The idea is to make our heritage modern, alive, and inspiring again.”
For Ganev, this journey is not just musical — it’s deeply spiritual.
“Once again, I met my own soul,” he reflects. “It was the one I had long been separated from. Now, with these new tools, I’m not just making music — I’m coming home, and I’m bringing the voice of my ancestors with me.”
