Bayamon, Puerto Rico Aug 6, 2026 (Issuewire.com) - Ilsa J. Nazario, MD, is a highly experienced pediatrician with nearly two decades of dedication to providing compassionate, comprehensive healthcare to children and families throughout Puerto Rico. Since beginning her pediatric practice in 2007, Dr. Nazario has focused on general pediatrics while also developing extensive expertise in neonatal and pediatric intensive care medicine. Her career reflects a deep commitment to improving access to healthcare, particularly for children and families living in underserved rural communities.
Dr. Nazario earned her Medical Degree as a General Medical Surgeon from the Autonoma University of Guadalajara in Mexico in 2001. Following medical school, she completed her internship at Dr. Tito Mattei Hospital in Yauco, Puerto Rico, before continuing her advanced training through a pediatric residency program in Bayamon from 2004 to 2007. During her residency, she developed a strong foundation in pediatric medicine while preparing to care for children with a wide range of medical needs.
After completing her residency, Dr. Nazario expanded her expertise in pediatric critical care, working extensively with high-risk newborns and critically ill children. She gained advanced procedural experience, including chest tube placement, umbilical catheterizations, surfactant instillation, endotracheal tube placement, and bladder catheterizations. Her specialized training and hands-on experience allowed her to provide lifesaving care for some of the most medically complex pediatric patients.
Dr. Nazario spent 16 years providing neonatal and pediatric intensive care services at San Pablo Hospital in Bayamon and an additional four years at Auxilio Mutuo Hospital in San Juan. Throughout her time in NICU and PICU settings, she cared for critically ill newborns, children requiring intensive monitoring, and patients needing complex medical interventions. These experiences shaped her clinical approach and strengthened her ability to provide comprehensive care for children with both routine and complex healthcare needs.
Today, Dr. Nazario focuses on general pediatrics while serving communities throughout Puerto Rico, including Barranquitas, Bayamon, Corozal, Toa Alta, and Orocovis. She provides care for patients from birth through 18 years of age, with a particular focus on families who face barriers to accessing healthcare services. Many of the children she treats come from agricultural families and low socioeconomic backgrounds, making her commitment to rural healthcare access a central part of her mission.
“What I enjoy most about my work is being able to help the little ones and provide medical services to families in rural areas. In urban areas, it’s easier to access medical services, but in the rural places where I work, it is more difficult for families to get access. So I’m trying to connect families with these services and make healthcare available to everyone in those areas. I work with children from agricultural families with low socioeconomic status, and being able to serve this population and make healthcare accessible to them is what brings me the most fulfillment in my practice,” says Dr. Nazario.
Beyond her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Nazario is passionate about preventive medicine, health education, and community outreach. She regularly participates in initiatives that promote childhood wellness and speaks at local schools to educate children and families about healthy practices and disease prevention.
A member of the Puerto Rican Pediatric Society since 2004, Dr. Nazario continues to advocate for improved pediatric care and greater support for children with special healthcare needs. She has a particular interest in caring for children who require long-term medical support, including those with tracheostomies, gastrostomy tubes, and other complex healthcare needs outside of hospital settings.
Through her extensive clinical experience, dedication to rural communities, and advocacy for vulnerable children, Dr. Ilsa J. Nazario continues to make a meaningful impact on pediatric healthcare throughout Puerto Rico. Her lifelong mission is to ensure that every child, regardless of background or location, has access to compassionate, high-quality medical care.
