New York City, New York Feb 13, 2019 (Issuewire.com) - Dr Aja-Onu graduated with his Medical Degree from the University of Nigeria, in Nsukka in 1986, giving him over three decades of experience in his field. After obtaining his medical degree he relocated to the United States where he completed his internship with the SUNY Downstate Medical Center followed by his internal medicine residency with St Johns Episcopal Hospital.
Dr Aja-Onu is dual certified in internal medicine and Gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. To stay up to date in his field he remains a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He currently practices with Ocean Gastroenterology and is affiliated with South Nassau Communities Hospital and Mercy Medical Center where he holds expertise in Advanced Endoscopy and related procedures. He previously served as the Chief of Gastroenterology with the SUNY Downstate Medical Center for over a decade.
Gastroenterology is the study of the normal function and diseases of the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver. It involves a detailed understanding of the normal action (physiology) of the gastrointestinal organs including the movement of material through the stomach and intestine (motility), the digestion and absorption of nutrients into the body, removal of waste from the system, and the function of the liver as a digestive organ. It includes common and important conditions such as colon polyps and cancer, hepatitis, gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn), peptic ulcer disease, colitis, gallbladder and biliary tract disease, nutritional problems, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and pancreatitis. In essence, all normal activity and disease of the digestive organs are part of the study of Gastroenterology.
