Ignoring Superyacht Maintenance during COVID-19 Risks Future Prospects, Expert Warns

With superyachts docked during the coronavirus pandemic, experts warn that maintenance procedures should not be ignored.

Isle of Wight, United Kingdom Oct 6, 2020 (Issuewire.com)  - Superyachting capitals across Europe have been cut-off from travel due to the coronavirus outbreak. The constant changes to quarantine requirements and travel restrictions mean companies chartering superyachts are down on bookings by 50% or more

While docked and no longer in service, John Warren of Premier Separator Services, an industry-leading provider of Alfa Laval and Westfalia separator parts for superyachts, advises superyacht owners not relax their maintenance schedules while boats remained docked.

“Reducing costs during the pandemic should not come at the expense of essential maintenance. Superyachts require proper maintenance even while docked for extended periods of time.”

John Warren warns of post-COVID product limitations on superyacht maintenance parts, stating: “Coronavirus has put pressure on many supply chains during lockdown, but we also need to think about post-lockdown too. If you push back your maintenance schedule, along with everyone else, what you’ll find is that demand skyrockets once travel restrictions lift and parts become much harder to source — potentially ruining plans to charter as early as possible. Other risk factors involved include incomplete maintenance logs when attempting to sell and an inability to find maintenance crews on short notice.”

"Maintenance schedules must be kept." Warren concludes.

The average superyacht maintenance costs for repairs and upkeep total at around $1m per year. This cost decreases when superyachts are docked, but it remains high. While it might seem like a cost that can be offset until charter bookings start coming in to prevent financial strain during the pandemic, Warren makes it clear that inaction has the potential for serious consequences.
