IC Insights: Global semiconductor shipments will again break one trillion in 2020

Shenzhen, Guangdong Mar 13, 2020 (Issuewire.com)  - According to IC insights report, the latest version of 2020 data shows that by 2020, annual shipments of semiconductors including integrated circuits and optoelectronics, sensors, and discrete semiconductors (OSD) will increase by 7%.

IC Insights predicts that total semiconductor shipments will increase by 7% to 1,036.3 billion units in 2020, which will be the second time in history that total semiconductor shipments exceed one trillion units. The record high was 1,046 billion in 2018. Among the semiconductor shipments in 2020, it is expected that the three components of optoelectronic devices, sensors and discrete will account for 69%, and integrated circuits will account for 31%.

As can be seen from the figure below, the semiconductor industry fluctuates cyclically. In 2007, semiconductor shipments exceeded the level of 600 billion units. Later, due to the global financial crisis, semiconductor shipments fell sharply in 2008 and 2009. By 2010, unit shipments rebounded sharply, with an increase of up to 25%. Since then, it has even exceeded the 1 trillion mark in 2018.

From 1978 to 2020, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of these 42-year semiconductor units is expected to be 8.6%.

IC insights said that by 2020, the gap between IC and O-S-D devices in total shipments will be greater than 2: 1, and O-S-D devices will account for the majority. It is expected that O-S-D devices will account for 69% of total semiconductor shipments, and 31% and this proportion has remained for many years.

In addition, IC insights predict that the scenarios of the semiconductor segment with the highest unit growth rate by 2020 include smartphones, automotive electronics, artificial intelligence, cloud and "big data" systems, and deep learning applications.
