McCandless (1917-2001) was known as the first city engineer of Los Altos, CA and the leader of a successful construction and real estate company in the heart of Silicon Valley. But when he sat down to write his autobiography, World War II took centre stage. Like many war veterans, McCandless had kept much of this experience to himself, despite its enormous impact on his life.
