Greater Baton Rouge Region 4-H Tech Club Wins Third Place in Esri 2019 Map Gallery Competition

Baton Rouge, Louisiana Aug 14, 2019 (Issuewire.com)  - Global Geospatial Institute (“GGI”) sponsors the state of Louisiana as a member of the 4-H National GIS/GPS Leadership Team. On a local parish level, GGI sponsors the 4-H Tech Club which is where youth members participate on a monthly basis in a variety of club activities including GIS, drones, environmental science, remote science, film and technology. The “GIS Tips and Tricks Story Map”, has been awarded Third Place in the Educational Map category from the 2019 Esri User Conference Map Gallery.

This year the 4-H Tech Club partnered with the DECA Club from U View Academy to sponsor this year's project. Together the seven-member team represented five parishes under the leadership of GGI and U View Academy teacher extraordinary Joan McGee and video tech aficionado produced video’s using their smartphones!

Ms Joan has wisely taught students by owing a smartphone they can do more than just be consumers, they can be producers as well. They produced a story map which contains videos for the GIS Tutorial I Basic Workbook and GIS Industry-Based Certification course. These videos provide unique tips for many chapters in the workbook, focusing on issues encountered in the related course.

They also learned to use many types of software during the production of this Story Map Journal such as; Power Prompter UTube, SmartPhones for videoing, iMovie, Scripts, Prompter Express.

Why GIS?

In a world and economy where progress is driven by technology, acquiring knowledge of computers and technological applications is vital for people of all ages. Geographic Information System, or GIS, is a quickly expanding technological field with endless applications in almost any industry. “GGI’s mission is to provide parents, students, and teachers with the support they need to succeed in the geospatial technology field of study,” says Fran Harvey, GISP, the Managing Director of GGI, f/k/a Louisiana Remote Sensing and GIS Institute. “We provide an engaging, rigorous, hands-on environment where students K-12, as well as life-long learners, can gain the technical, creative and critical thinking skills needed to compete as global citizens in an ever-changing world.”

A Vision to Succeed

With the vision to offer students the newest science and technology through geospatial education, Harvey led GGI to provide the first and only Industry-Based Certification (IBC) for GIS in the State of Louisiana. Harvey’s educational outreach efforts have resulted in 43 school districts and several hundred teachers being introduced and trained in GIS applications. She continues to provide opportunities for educators through the Maps and Apps for Teachers. Teachers can register online for the workshops or for Teacher GIS Certification at www.lagisk12.org.
