For Providers By Providers Louisiana & Volunteer Louisiana Commission announce a new AmeriCorps program.

Early Childhood Teacher Corps recruits & trains new teacher assistants to meet the need for a quality early childhood education workforce while providing targeted support for over 500 children, birth through age four.

New Orleans, Louisiana Oct 6, 2023 (Issuewire.com)  - For Providers By Providers Louisiana and Volunteer Louisiana Commission announce a new AmeriCorps program “Early Childhood Teacher Corps.”

For Providers By Providers of Louisiana (4PXP) and the Volunteer Louisiana Commission (Commission), today announced a new AmeriCorps program, The Early Childhood Teacher Corps. The Early Childhood Teacher Corps is designed to address the critical workforce shortage in early childhood education while providing opportunities for parents, recent graduates, career changers, and others to enter the early education profession through an accelerated program.

In its inaugural year, 16 Early Childhood Teacher Corps members will work as teacher’s assistants in one of six high-quality state-licensed early learning centers in New Orleans, where they will provide targeted support for children under age five focused on developing the literacy, language, and math skills for them to be ready for kindergarten. The program prepares AmeriCorps members for careers in early learning with the ongoing training, coaching, and support needed for personal and professional growth and success post-service.

“We are excited to welcome For Providers By Providers into the AmeriCorps network. Their Early Childhood Teacher Corps will address immediate needs in New Orleans through service and help address long-term needs through workforce development,” says Judd Jeansonne, Executive Director of Volunteer Louisiana.

AmeriCorps members commit to a term of 900 hours over at least seven months, during which they receive a total living allowance of $12,600, training toward a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, and become eligible for an Eli Segal Education Award to pay for further education upon completion of their term of service. The first cohort for this program will start on October 6, 2023.

“The Early Childhood Teacher Corps provides a fast track into the early care and education profession for parents, people recently finishing high school, or individuals looking to start or change their careers. It provides valuable hands-on experience in the classroom with good pay, extensive training, and a mentor teacher. Participants will have the opportunity to earn an early childhood ancillary certificate, increasing their earning potential even more as a lead teacher,’ says Rochelle Wilcox, CEO of 4PXP. ‘But the most amazing part is that they will be touching the lives of our youngest learners through appropriate engagement in reading and math, the basics for them to be successful.’

In this first year, the Early Childhood Teacher Corps members will serve at least 500 children in high-quality Early Learning Centers.
