Album Review

Same Ship Different Day

Erica Sunshine Lee, 2022

Same Ship Different Day is the tenth studio album from Nashville recording artist and two-time Trop Rock Music Association Female Vocalist of the Year, Erica Sunshine Lee. Her country-girl-next-door style is woven into the 24-track album that makes you feel as if you’re on a journey with your best friend. There are highs, there are lows, but there’s also plenty of laughter—and perhaps a little bit of drinking. As with her previous releases, this is an album capable of injecting the warmth into your world.

The opening song, Grain of Salt, puts Lee’s talent on full display, encouraging the listener not to take life too seriously, as the song title suggests, but to take it with a grain of salt. It’s a feel-good song at its finest. Key West Blue is an equally infectious track that is sure to trigger a lifetime of fun memories had with old (or new) friends.

Erica proves time and time again that she is an incredibly skilled lyricist and storyteller. This is evident on such tracks as The Whiskey, High on the Low Country, Fragile, and Hold a Hurricane. It’s My Turn is a call to action with lyrics such as “If I want things to change, I have to stop making the same mistakes,” and “It’s time I start standing up for myself,” a relatable and real thought most listeners have had. Champagne proves to be the anthem of the album. It’s all about celebrating the fact that you had the courage to not only take your turn but also to take back control. It is toasting champagne to all of life’s moments, the “stepping stones” and the “growing pains,” along with the reminder that “the bluest skies come after the rain.” Single for the Summer reiterates the happiness you can have by being yourself and having fun with friends. As Lee so eloquently states, “Just because I’m alone doesn’t mean I’m lonely.” Everyone should have at least one summer filled with “sunsets and no regrets.”

The beauty and fun of summer love also make their appearance through California Gold, Song for the Summer, and Salt, all songs that will revive memories of warm summer days, sun-kissed skin, and the feeling that this moment is the only one that matters, even if it doesn’t last forever.

Colington Creek Inn is a masterpiece. The song is based on an impromptu trip to the Outer Banks she took with her mom. It was written during her stay at the Inn. Erica paints a picture of healing and rejuvenation and a heart finally finding peace with the past. The song is stripped down; the harmonica and guitar are the perfect pairings to her soulful voice.

As always, Lee’s songwriting and vocal presentation display versatility and depth that is rare to find. She makes being honest, vulnerable, and real look easy while also finding a way to inject humor into songs such as Same Ship Different Day, Love Thy Neighbor, The House, Can’t Kill this Cactus, and Don’t be a Richard, a song that is sure to come to mind if you are cut off in traffic.

A 24-track album isn’t common these days. It’s even less common to find a 24-track album you don’t want to end. It’s an album that feels like “You’re catching up with an old friend.” In this case, we can be thankful for a repeat
