New York City, New York Apr 14, 2024 (Issuewire.com) - According to the CDC 1 in 4 Americans have a disability, but make up less than 3% of all roles on film and TV. Actor and producer Sommer Carbuccia and seven fellow NYU alums are on a mission to change that. They have entered the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge, a film competition now in its 11th year, that seeks to bring awareness and representation for disabled actors on screen. The challenge is to make a short film from start to finish with all volunteers in just five days. But Sommer is no stranger to a challenge. During his undergraduate drama training at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, he had a tragic accident that cost him his leg. But that wasn’t the end of Sommer’s story. He went on to appear on the CW’s Riverdale, Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS and more.
His latest role is “Marky” in Breaking In, the short film he produced with seven of his fellow NYU alums for the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge. Directed by Amanda Pinto, Breaking In is not a film about disability. A goal of Sommer’s as a producer in the challenge is to show people with disabilities as more than their disability. “We are often seen in media as a representation of the person who overcomes their circumstances to live a full life. Used to inspire others and the audience kind of thing you know?” he says. “While those stories can be true to life and valid, we can also be just bad roommate like my character in the last film we made for the challenge called Mac & Cheese. Or a lover, or a fighter, or a villain. Hopefully, more people can start to see us like that and I hope that’s what our films and others in the challenge are able to do!”
Breaking In features direction by Amanda Pinto, a screenplay by Yianni Papadimos, cinematography and editing by Jake Nathanson, underscoring and original music by Ben Chavez, and Assistant Direction by Matthew Stoke. Starring opposite Sommer as “Dennis” is Teo Rapp-Olsen and Danté Jean Felix as “Mike”.
Easterseals Disability Film Challenge has made over 600 unique films since its inception. You can watch Breaking In for free here at BreakingIn.Movie
