Minneapolis, Minnesota May 15, 2025 (Issuewire.com) - The Emmy® Award-winning filmmakers behind When We Were Apollo and When We Were Shuttle have launched their newest project, Erased for Space, with a Kickstarter campaign set to launch May 28th!
This two-part documentary series uncovers the untold story of the communities displaced to make way for NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida and Stennis Space Center in Mississippi during the 1960s space race. While NASA’s official history celebrates innovation and heroism, Erased for Space centers around those left out of the narrative—families, farmers, and historic Black communities whose land was seized under eminent domain.
“Many made sacrifices for the space program,” says director Zachary Weil. “But some were never given the choice. This film is about giving voice to those who were marginalized by the larger national narrative.”
Inspired by the academic work of Stuart Simms (In the Shadows of Apollo) and the oral history collection efforts of Matthew Barrett, a filmmaker from Hancock County, Mississippi, the film blends archival material with powerful firsthand accounts.
Time-sensitive and socially resonant, Erased for Space interrogates the true cost of national greatness—and asks who gets to decide what progress looks like.
