Ellen DeGeneres Says Everything is Better in the UK after Confirming She Moved because of Donald Trump

In a recent conversation event at Cheltenham's Everyman Theatre, Ellen DeGeneres finally revealed that she moved to the UK with her wife because of President Trump.

Cheltenham, England Jul 21, 2025 (Issuewire.com)  - Ellen DeGeneres said she left the United States of America because of President Donald Trump. She now lives in the UK and feels like it is better there. “Everything here is just better,” she said. Ellen spoke at an event in Cheltenham’s Everyman Theatre on Sunday, her first public talk since the move. Richard Bacon asked if Trump was the reason, and the US comedian said yes. The crowd laughed, but she clearly meant it. Her move to the UK feels like a fresh start for both her and her partner, Portia de Rossi.

Ellen further said, “We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in.’ And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.’”

DeGeneres moved to the Cotswolds in 2024 with her wife, Portia de Rossi. This came after her talk show ended and she began her final comedy tour across the US. At the time, the move was called permanent. A source told The Wrap that she was “never coming back” and said Trump pushed her to leave. But Ellen had not said anything about it until now. Her recent words confirmed what many had guessed. She chose peace over American politics. At the conversation event, the comedian told Bacon her new home was “beautiful”. “Everything here is just better – the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.”

Ellen shared worries about LGBTQ+ rights in the US. She hinted that she and Portia de Rossi might marry again in the UK, where they feel more accepted and safe. “The Baptist Church in America is trying to reverse gay marriage,” DeGeneres spoke about a recent vote by Southern Baptists in June. They backed a plan to try to end same-sex marriage in the US. Her words showed deep concern about growing hate and division. “They're trying to literally stop it from happening in the future and possibly reverse it,” the comedian continued. “Portia and I are already looking into it, and if they do that, we're going to get married here.”

Later in the conversation, DeGeneres added, “I wish we were at a place where it was not scary for people to be who they are. I wish that we lived in a society where everybody could accept other people and their differences. So until we’re there, I think there’s a hard place to say we have huge progress.”
