Prior to her current endeavours, she was the Project Manager for 18-month grant-funded patient safety/quality improvement projects for 18 hospitals collaborative in Central Ohio, as well as the Director of Risk Management at Kaiser Permanente in Southern California.

When asked what made her choose a career in nursing, she said that her mother, Ms. Janet Lou Schlingman, influenced her career choice a great deal. She earned her nursing degree from Saint Joseph School of Nursing, followed by her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio in 1978. 

With over four decades of experience in her field, Ellen attributes her success to having good mentors, supervisors, and head nurses. She is the author of a book on the prevention of medical malpractice and a national public speaker. Due to her outstanding work in her field, she earned the Prism Award and the Dick Davidson Award.

A registered nurse (RN) is a nurse who has graduated from a nursing program and met the requirements outlined by a country, state, province or similar licensing body to obtain a nursing license. RNs fulfill a variety of job duties. In addition to their primary role in treating and caring for patients, their responsibilities also include educating patients and the public about a variety of medical conditions, as well as providing emotional support and advice to the families of their patients. Other RN job functions include leadership, research, performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results, operating medical equipment, administering medications, recording patients’ symptoms and medical histories, and assisting with patient rehabilitation and follow-up.

Outside of work, Ellen enjoys reading various medical publications, including the RN Journal and The New England Journal of Medicine. In addition to English, she speaks French.
